Voice as Matter

 It's a pleasure for me to share new ideas within my line of research concerning voice in relation to butoh dance. I continue to be fascinated by the dance of this other body that is voice and how it moves in relation to the material body and the surrounding space.

We will be exploring the material dimension of voice in relation to body and movement touching on a few central themes:
-Deep listening, micro-movement. Observing the soundscape of our own body. Heartbeat, the flow of our blood, the wave patterns of our breathing. Qualities of silence.
-The movement of air, as a way of connecting with the materiality of voice in relation to inner and outer space.
-Reflection, vibration, resonance. Like light, we might consider sound, and therefore voice, as a vibration of molecules. Constant movement, infinite possibilities of encounter and transmission.
-Plasticity and potential. Exploring the potential of the physicality of the voice in the space, in connection with the structures of our environment. Dynamics, forces, qualities.


This work is designed to provide practical tools for people from different disciplines who are interested in exploring the possibilities of voice in relation to the body and movement. No previous experience in vocal technique or dance is required. 


Josephine Grundy (UK/France) is a multidisciplinary artist and teacher based in Barcelona since 1996.

Her initial academic training was in Human Sciences (history and philosophy of science) at University College London. Then she went on to study the Lecoq physical theatre method in Barcelona, also taking workshops and performing with several physical theatre companies, including Susan Byrne, Teatro de los Sentidos, Théâtre du Mouvement y Cie Jeanne Simone. 

She has extensive training in vocal technique (Estill Voice Craft, Loti Lewis) and lends her voice to a wide range of musical projects and professional recordings. She began to study butoh dance in 2004, at first with Rosana Barra and then with other masters from Japan and other parts of the world, including Atsushi Takenouchi, Tebby Ramisake, Imre Thormann, Minako Seki, Gyohei Zaitsu, Yoshito Ohno, Yumiko Yoshioka, and Seisaku. She has continued to practice and study butoh ever since, developing her own work, collaborating with other artists and performers, and giving regular classes and workshops. 


Since she was a child she has always been close to music and visual art, and in her butoh practice she explores different possible relationships between body, voice and sound, different materials, and physical matter in general.
